First 4th of July
As I mentioned earlier, we went up to New Haven, CT for the 4th this year, Priya just got a job there working for the environmental design firm Atelier Ten. She started on July 1st. She and mom left SLC on June 22nd to drive across the country. It's a pretty straight shot, on I-80 all the way and then a little on I-95 at the end. They got into New Haven on Friday late morning. Priya was lucky to have an apartment by the following Tuesday and she had already moved some of her stuff in on Thursday.
Allen and Saha picked me up from work around noon on Friday and we started our adventure. We stopped around 2:30 to feed Saha and get some coffee. We took a detour on the way up and stopped to visit with Ruchi, Sharad and Karthik. We also go to see Ruchi's mom, PritiAunti, who is in the US for another couple of months.

We continued on and made it to New Haven around 8:30. We stopped at Priya's new place, dropped of her stuff that we had brought her, and had some Thai food for dinner before heading to the hotel.
Saturday morning we headed over to Priya's place, had some donuts for breakfast, performed a Kumb ceremony, which is for a new house - usually performed by the youngest family member - and helped Priya put together her new Ikea furniture.

We then went in search of lunch. After lunch we went to Costco to get some more things for Priya's apartment, namely a microwave and a standing fan, since her apartment doesn't have AC or ceiling fans.
We came back to the apartment, unloaded and took a stroll around New Haven. There was this really cool piece of public art that Priya had found earlier in the week. It's only up for a limited time.

Then went back to the hotel to change for dinner. We went to dinner to a Tapas place that mom and Priya had tried a few days earlier. It was really good. We took a little walk around afterward and went down by the water.

Sunday we went to the beach. We went on quite a quest to find a beach umbrella and finally found a patio umbrella at Walmart.

"Daddy, I don't think I like the water!"

"Well, maybe..."

"I think I'd rather hang out with Nani Ma on her lap under the umbrella!"

We didn't stay at the beach too long. There were a lot of broken, sharp shells in the sand and the water so it was hard not to hurt your feet walking the water and it was really murky and shallow really far out. We left after about 1 1/2 hours. We went back to the hotel, showered and then picked up pizza and took it to Priya's place to eat. We got the pizza from Pepe's which is one of the famous places in New Haven. It was fine, but I didn't think it was anything to rave about. Our pizza was kinda burnt around the edges.
After dinner, to escape the heat of Priya's apartment, we went to Starbucks to chill and play Settlers of Catan. We played one game there and then went back to her place to play another round. It seemed that whomever held Saha during the beginning of the game was the one who won, so I won the first round and Priya won the second round.

Monday we went to a market/cafe for brunch and then took a drive up to the top of East Rock, which is a hill overlooking New Haven.

We left New Haven around 1 pm and stopped to visit with Tori, Carl and Julianna, who live just outside of Danbury, CT, in the mountains of CT. They have a beautiful big house with a large yard. Unfortunately, I forgot to take any pictures with them. We had lunch with them and continued on our journey home.
Saha was AMAZING in the car. We went the whole way up without her crying more than just a little, nothing that a little pacifier didn't solve. On the way back, she was happy up until about 1 1/2 hours from home. Then I moved into the backseat and sang to her the rest of the way home.
We had a great weekend and it was wonderful to see everyone and to see Priya's new digs. We hope to be making that trip more in the future.
There are more pictures from our trip in the online album, linked below, I just included the highlights in the posting.
